Switzerland was, like the Czech lands, since the late Middle Ages, an autonomous part of the Holy Roman Empire. The area was not strongly centralized, and therefore among the preserved graphics views of smaller settlements and the countryside dominate. Maps reflect the complex division of the territory into distinctive cantons, which remains until today.
