The set contains not only the announced territories in the Upper Rhine, but also much of Hesse and part of what is today France (Alsace, Lorraine). The form of the set reflectes conflicts between the Empire and France in the second half of the 17th and early 18th centuries as it includes a number of illustrations of fortifications in the Rhineland.
