Italy was during the 18th century increasingly fragmented into many small states. The structure of the Moll Collection respects this historic administrative division. The Kingdom of Sardinia thus includes the mainland cradle of the local dynasty - Savoy and Piedmont, Veneto contains much of the Dalmatian coast. Greater Duchy of Milan has a separate shelfmark, other smaller territorial units in northern Italy are merged together. Central Italy is included in the Papal States sections contain a number of copperplate engravings of Rome. The last sections are devoted to Tuscany and the Kingdom of Naples and Sicily. Especially in the sections with the shelf location of northern Italy there are a greater number of manuscript maps. Most were manufactured according to the printed originals, but there may be cartographic rarities among them.
